Aspiring leaders programme
Course overview
Building leadership capability for tomorrow makes sense for organisational sustainability. Many organisations realise the importance of the future too late and are faced with a skill or leadership gap.
The ‘Tomorrow’s Leaders’ programme is a series of contemporary modules aimed at building leadership capacity now for the future. As with any competence or capability, they require practice to master and deploy.
We do not expect delegates to walk out ‘new people’; we aim to provide a series of contemporary models, theories and reflections for individuals to understand, reflect, utilise, and ultimately master.
The programme modules will be interspersed with individual 1-2-1 coaching to ensure deeper reflection and confidential discussion to aid development.
The programme is aimed at tomorrow's talent, new or just-in-post managers who aspire to become leaders in health and social care in the future. It is also designed for leaders and managers who would like to re-engage with their development and learn contemporary leadership theories.
This programme looks to build leaders who are:
- Compassionate
- Agile with their leadership
- Visionary
- Responsible and accountable.
Module 1: Leadership and management – An overview
- This module provides the context for the whole programme by aligning the narrative of leadership and management. Through this, we can build a solid foundation to consider contemporary leadership approaches such as compassionate leadership.
Module 2: High performing teams
- Matrix working is not a new concept; however, it can be difficult as a leader to ensure that your people gain the right balance, are motivated and are utilising their skills adeptly. How and when do we take the time to discuss, plan and identify who is right for a project and how do we manage their workload when they are part of a matrix team?
- This session considers matrix working and the agility of leaders to meet individual, departmental and organisational requirements. This module considers an overview of team mapping and emphasis on critical discussions as well as managing team and workload expectations.
Module 3: You as a leader
- Leaders are constantly watched, for their behaviour, outputs, communications, and effectiveness. Being a leader is about what we ‘be’. Setting an example not only for our organisation but for ourselves is a crucial aspect. Compassionate leadership is about tackling unacceptable behaviour, helping people by having quality conversations, and removing barriers.
- In module 3, we revisit compassionate leadership by further busting myths and deepening our understanding of compassionate leadership. Within this module, we will review other models that point to a leader's accountability and the differing scenarios that they provide.
Module 4: Coaching as a leadership style
- As the delegates will have worked together for several sessions, this session ensures a high element of psychological safety and is the reason it is placed as the 4th module. Within the module we consider an introduction to coaching, discuss various approaches and understand why coaching is prevalent now. This is a highly practical session with triads performing their coaching while the third person observes and reflects.
- The basics of coaching are covered while moving on to coaching as a leadership style and where this fits with a leader. This is a highly practical and reflective module.
Module 5: A review of leadership
- Module 5 is a review of the previous 4 sessions allowing the delegates to add their reflections and potentially state their actions. A key part of this module is the delivery of a presentation on the content of the programme.
- In module 1 the facilitator provides the topic in the form of a question. In module 2, we decide the groups who will work on and present in module 5. This is a highly supportive session with each group being the ‘panel’ while the other presents. Where possible, invites for the delegates' managers are sent out, who also provide time for the panel.
It's possible to provide three coaching sessions for each of the delegates. The sessions come in between the modules at the agreement of the coach and the client. This is a supportive intervention to support the direction of travel. This programme can also be provided to more senior colleagues by making the content more strategic. The module names stay similar.
- Duration: One day per module / small amount of pre-work
- Delivery method: Face to face or virtual
